On May 6th, during the first day of the Macfrut Fiera, the Agrifood Clust-ER working group of the Biotech4Food project hosted a meeting titled “Biotechnology for Food – The Intersectoral Lever”.
The event welcomed a diverse audience, including students from the regional higher education programme ITS Tech&Food, and focused on the role of biotechnology in the food sector. During the session, the results of a European survey carried out within the project were presented, offering an overview of the current state of the biotechnology sector in food at the European level.
Several European initiatives were highlighted as examples of excellence, including the recently launched BioFoodHub of the Emilia-Romagna Region, FOODER, and the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant in Ghent, which the project will visit in June.
The session also featured insights into the benefits of biotechnology for the food sector, including improved access to sustainable, safe, and nutritious food. In addition, an initiative to map food by-products and residues at the regional level in Emilia-Romagna was presented as a case study.
We thank Marco Foschini, Francesco Fenga, Augusta Caligiani, Marco Dalla Rosa, and Giulio Campana for their contributions.
