On May 27th, Wagralim hosted a webinar in collaboration with DigitalFoodLab, Sparkalis, and VIB to explore the growing intersection between Biotechnology and FoodTech — a powerful convergence that is redefining the future of the agri-food sector.
With increasing global challenges around food security, environmental sustainability, and health, the link between Biotech and FoodTech is becoming more strategic than ever. Biotech, as defined by the OECD, applies science and technology to living organisms (or their derivatives) to produce knowledge, goods, and services. Meanwhile, FoodTech encompasses startups and entrepreneurs across the agri-food value chain – from production to distribution – reinventing our plates through innovation in product, distribution, marketing, and business models.
The webinar highlighted several trends driving this convergence, including stronger governmental support, the need to scale innovations efficiently, and increased engagement from major agri-food companies. While overall funding for FoodTech has declined, the sector is maturing — particularly in Europe — and is poised to disrupt markets with bold, forward-looking strategies.
Key insights shared by Sparkalis and VIB emphasized the importance of protecting startup Intellectual Property from the outset, building strategic partnerships, planning for scale-up early, and understanding market potential from day one. For future-oriented companies, this convergence offers an opportunity to lead the transformation of food systems.
