The regional government of Galicia (Xunta de Galicia) recently approved the new “Galician Research and Innovation Plan 2025-2027”. The document, which includes numerous new features compared to the previous plan, will prioritise attention to three high-impact initiatives for the region, namely biotechnology, Deep Tech (artificial and quantum intelligence) and Clean Technologies. These are priority areas for their high potential and opportunity for the region, on which the Xunta wishes to focus its efforts. Specifically, in the field of biotechnology, a research and development pole in this field will be promoted in Galicia, focusing on genomic medicine, the creation of new materials, pharmacology and agrifood.
Likewise, to ensure that the projects developed in Galician knowledge centres reach society and have a positive impact on it, thus transferring the results generated, among other measures, a pilot office will be designed and created for the valorisation of knowledge in biotechnology to optimise the processes of identification, protection and use of the results generated.
The Galician Research and Innovation Plan 2025-2027 marks a significant step forward in positioning Galicia as a hub for cutting-edge technologies. By prioritizing biotechnology, Deep Tech, and clean technologies, the regional government is not only fostering scientific and technological advancements but also strengthening the local economy and creating new opportunities for growth.
As projects like Biotech4Food and the involvement of key industry leaders such as ANFACO-CECOPESCA and Hifas Innovation Hub, whose base is established in Galicia, demonstrate that collaboration between research institutions and the private sector will be essential in driving progress. This ambitious plan lays the foundation for a more innovative, sustainable, and competitive Galicia in the years to come.
